Well I was playing today on my hunter that I am trying out and I started thinking about WoW and its good and bad points.
Graphically WoW is very beautiful and this is coming from someone who really hated the graphics at first. I find myself saying OMG how beautiful this is alot. I really enjoy the quest system instead of the typical grinding out XP. PvP I could care less about. It always turns into a gankfest anyways.
There is one thing, however, that is a big negative for me and today it finally hit me what that is. WoW brings NOTHING new or innovative to the table. It's basically the same old thing done over. OK perhaps better in a few areas, nonetheless the same old thing. For someone who has almost 3 yrs invested in DAoC, like alot of BWC members do, why would they leave except maybe to try it out.
Blizzard is already starting to try and balance classes out based on PvP, a HUGE mistake IMO. Mythic did this with DAoC, they had no choice really, and it ruined it for alot of ppl.
I am really started to doubt whether WoW will be a game I play longterm, if at all. I really want something that can truly be called 'next generation'.
Here is hoping the guys at Sigil come thru with Vanguard:SoH

I agree, and disagree. Over all, it is a very fun game that can be played by both the hardcore powergamer and the casual player who doesn't have a lot of time.
It is very newbie friendly without being too watered down. The quests do a good job of supplying you with gear and XP as well as pointing you to new zones that are suitable for your level.
The mini map and full maps add a lot to the game. I can't imagine going back to another MMO that doesn't have a map. So in that regard, it is innovative.
But, it is still a level based MMO, and as such, there aren't too many surprises. Fact is, it's going to be several years before you see something truly groundbreaking in this genre of game.

Your review reminds me a lot of my impressions of AC2. Beautiful but nothing new and every MOG succumbs to nerfing. I don't know when the next gen MOG is coming ... EQ2 well from the game that defined "grind" in MOG I highly doubt it.
If WoW does actually remove the grind I think I'll at least give it a shot. DAOC is so grind filled now with ToA and even NF RVR turning DAOC into a zerg/seige type game that I just don't enjoy it.

Welp Fard is at the high end. Im still on the low end since the person I share with is a hog. My take is while you may have a point on the brings nothing new. You are in essence correct. But here is my take. Alright you take the standard Daoc class lets say Wizard,Eldrich,Runemaster
combined at each spec so you basically have Bolt, DD,AOE,Debuff, stun, speed, pbt,bt,af shield,
now if you want to go Per class its even less.
But take a WoW mage, you get
DD,AOE DD,Insta DD "think skald",Frost nuke which slows,Summon Drink,Summon Food,Frost shield,Fire DD,Mana Regen, Mana shield, Teleport, blink,Summon mana stone, ETC. now looking over that isnt even the whole list of spells, just the ones off the top of my head. Basically every class in wow is fleshed out, and is even more fleshed out in regards to Talents, which still need balancing mind you. As far as the difficulty goes, I was kinda peeved, but now i stick to stuff 1 or 2 levels above and not get daring and go at something level 5 above. Mind you blizz said they still have to tweak stuff they broke and spirit is useless atm. So maybe next patch it might go back to being a bit easier. I dont know but after playing DAOC utterly shitty pve WoW is so refreshing. I like the fact that I do not have to rush to hit high level, I like the fact that the pve game is not fucking trashy like DAOC's. I like the fact that you can quest all the way up to max level if you want, instead of the fucking mundane grinding we have become so acustomed in daoc. In essence you can experiance WoW the stories n shit, and be a part of them. As opposed to DAOC non existant shitty story. Far as pvp balance goes I remember them saying they would balance each diffrently but it seems they are doing it half assed. Like a mage cant invis in pvp anylonger but he cant in pve either, that makes sense because he could just pass by all the mobs go in kill the main mob and leave which aint right. Then we have Warrios taunt issue dont know why they made it less effective honestly. I still have faith in blizz thou. We got Heroes to look forward to and actual pvp stuff they are working on. WoW wont be Evolutionairy, but it will be fun, something I stopped having in Daoc a fucking long time ago.
Yea i forgot to add something to I have played DAOC for 3 years and have dropped it like a bad habit after camping arts leveling some of the painful ones, a bit, and getting ML's etc. And you know what I dont care, for the simple fact its not fun for me anymore. When I did all those things the game was semi fun. What 3 year syndrome is refered to is EQ syndrome those guys spent ages years 4 years + getting the perfect EQ toon only to throw it away for EQ 2 some ppl are so attached the only reason they stayed is because of so much time invested. Thats nuts if you are not having fun you should not play. Even I suffered that in EQ when DAOC cameout i tried it and it was much better to me than EQ even thou it was bland but i still kept my EQ acct active for another year because I was so attached I could not throw it all away"And I couldnt sell >< " Daoc for me dropped the ball the moment it became prevalant to have 2 accts logged in at the same time. its a fucking joke, call me cheap call me poor but if you need 2 chars to compete and 2 comps or a jacked up comp to run daoc with 2 bots the game has lost its luster.
Sure you dont need 2 accts but if you dont have it you are losing so much of an advantage what is the point in playing. Like I will go crit shot for 300 get shot back normally for 600. go to melee hit for 110 get hit 1 handed for 190? whats the fucking point the guy isnt better he is buffed and you CANNOT win. As in wow even if someone is buffed you can just use a trinket or dispell it. since buffs dont mean as much as they do in WoW. I dont knwo when WoW is released ima play it because Daoc has nothing to offer me.

Well, my Rogue is level 50, my warlock is level 18, my hunter is level 11, and i have to say, the only thing i dont like about the game so far is that when you remake a character you do the exact same things over again in the exact same zones you did.
on the positive side though, its alot faster because you know where everything is, where good camps of mobs are if you feel like grinding, and you know where there are a good deal of decent quests available to you depending on your level. the good thing about WoW is it doesnt force you to group for anything other than elite quests and instances (where most of the elite quests seem to take place anyways).
im not positive that blizzard is really balancing around pvp over pve, especially with the mage invis nerf, the bottom line with that is i saw a level 42 mage and a level 39 mage invis below the pirate ship in BB for the fleetcommander or whatever NPC that we couldnt get to because the rogues' stealth was getting seen through (me and the other rogue were 44 and 45). they invis'd below, and they killed the level 47 mob before the other 10ish below deck killed them. that to me is a game breaking issue, the mages could literally blow through quest/instance content, very similar to the way a rogue can, except they could do it at normal speed with less of a chance of being detected, of course it also had its overpoweredness in pvp as well.
all that being said, i am a firm believer that before blizzard continues to "adjust" classes either upward or downward, they need to impliment all the skills and talents they are planning each class to have. currently it seems that classes such as the warriors mages and most likely soon to be rogues either have been or will be getting nerf'd simply because their talents are taking them leaps above the classes without in both pvp and pve. overall it seems that the classes are nice and well equipped for both group and solo combat. ill most certainly be playing when the game releases, if the pvp is even half of what daoc's was, the combination of the pvp and pve of this game will be able to keep me interested for quite some time.

i would also like to add, that this game feels far less "i have to play to keep up" than daoc ever did. its no where near as hard to take a few days off because its so much easier to level with rested experience. although, one other thing i would love to see would be the group size increased to 6-8, 5 just seems a bit small to me.

Also filth im actually having diffrent results so far I really havent crossed over much. I madeh uman to 10 and saw goldshire westfalls. My dwarf went to Human area for the hell of it, and my NE has pretty much stood in Auberdine. I guess if you want to explore you can see diff content. I wish i could play more but i dont feel like i miss much when i miss out days and weeks. Im still hanging in the 20 sub 20 area of leveling so when game is released im not bored. I also stopped playing horde completly hopefully come nov/dec i wont rem shit and it will be brand new again !!! Q_Q

Thats because in the PVP part your opponents aren't super high level yet with great gear. DAOC was like that in the very beginning, and it got progressively worse as in addition to levelling to 50 you had to get epic armor, then SC armor, then level artifact and do ML's.
Hall, one reason it got less fun is because you gave up the PVP. Endlessly doing TOA for many chars - ugh!

I gave up PvP after pve because NF sucked, IT ran progressivly worse on my system, and the fact you need to dual boot shitty NF made me say fuck it.
That and I was no longer unique.

actually this is only partially true, the reason i say this is because there is no selling of good items to other players, most of the top end awesome items are BoP (bind on pickup) which means that all those l33t pvpers are going to have to be good enough to crack through the top level dungeons. anyone can be a crafter in this game, my skinning is maxed and my leatherworking is close and i havent put more than maybe 2 hours into leatherworking total. i assure you, especially since im playing on the beta server so i can get a feel of the alliance territories before i play horde for release, ive seen some of the best shit in the game, and its not all that better than what you get questing just to get to 60. also, while gear does play a role in how good your character is, its absolutly not the end all to a character like in daoc. when SC first came out people that could afford mp armor and 5point oc scing could kill 2-3 people that were unsc'd with ease, there is no armor thats THAT much better unless the stuff you are wearing is completely statless (which it wont be because even PC'd armor has stats even without enchanting). this game is nothing like daoc when it comes to gear imo, ive worn the same shit since i could equip it at level 46, and i probably wont have to change it until i do some higher level dungeon crawling and find better stuff, and this is at 51. now, im not saying they wont change it, but even if they do, if you dont want to put in the time to get it, its not going to be that big of a deal... ive seen people my level in stuff that i wouldnt wear 5 levels ago, but they still solo fine, kill people fine, and work in groups fine.
but in all honesty, if you guys are going to be totally anti pve, then you should stay in daoc where you dont have to pve anymore. i mean, even though rvr sucks, no matter what you do, ive soloed, 8v8, and zerg'd, it all sucks, if you have fun there is no reason to quit anyways. /shrug
