I agreed about the combat system until the last week or two. Special moves MEAN something, and there are way more of them now. Most idiots just zerg stuff, and take lots of hits and damage adn complain there is no tactics and that downtime is too long. Yet if you actually work as a group, just like on daoc, you do WAY better.
Is it rready? I really think it should have released mid july. Aparently this date has been around for a while.
I've been in beta for a while now, and I will be buying it on release. I honestly feel it is better than anygame out there right now. No, it doesn't have the content of a present day EQ or AC, but it has more than all 3 realms of daoc combined. There are lots of npc multistepped quests, they just need to work on pointing you in teh right direction. There are more dungeon types things in there than daoc has, plus the whole random poi spawn thing.
The level of detail in the environment blows absolutly everything out there out of the water.
I was in SB beta briefly, and I'm in this one. No way in hell I would have bought SB (and most of the beta testers said as such). Same as AC2. Those games were no where near ready. AO wasn't ready either. This one is better than the rest.
Face it, players always say that the game isn't ready. It is a business, there comes a point you have to release. I've not once, ever, crashed in this game, on any of my machines. Yeah, the servers died and what nto, but not a client crash.
The game releases next week, there is an end game in place but it needs work on. Ya know what, daoc's endgame was horrid on release as well, and it turned out ok (altho it bores me after short periods of play). The point is, the end game system is in place (unlike say ac2). It can't possibly be 100% ready, you just can't test the endgame naturally at the same level as release will. Even if all the beta players said it was good to go, 3 months into release, there will be drastic changes across the board. It is the nature of the beast. There are 40-50k testers, and it was less than 20k up until a month or so ago. there will be 400-500k accounts sold this year perhaps. More still will be found in one month than another 10 months of beta could find.
They've done a good job I think catering the game to many. They had a post on the public boards themselves, it isn't the best game for the hardcore pvp'er, sb or acDT or somethign might win that. If you are a quest freak, then eq for you. things like that. BUt they do have a good bit of each, and offer a well rounded game.
I know many on here aren't, but the roleplayers are going to absolutly love this game. They give 100x's more tools than anything else out there. I never have in other games, but you just can't help yourself when you walk into a cantina on here.
Dunno, without the changes to all the combat skills, I would be holding off. Right now I have a lot of fun in it. More fun than I've had leveling in any of the other online games. The pace seems good, you can solo at least early on easily, as people figure out their roles in combat, groups start to click well. Of course you group with the idiot who just attacks and goes afk, and he hurts the group, but doesn't listen.
I can understand perhaps an EQ player, or AC player saying it lacks things, but daoc doesn't hold a candle in many regards to the game. But I do grow bored of the rvr, and thats it at the end. And level his horrid in daoc, it is much more enjoyable in swg.
Game isn't for everyone, no game is. As I said here or elsewhere, try it yourself make up your own mind. Don't listen to mindless rants, every game has them. Don't listen to those who say it is the best game ever made, every game has those as well. Some where in the middle is where you will be.
