THIS SHIT EXPIRES WEDNESDAY NIGHT SO GET ON IT

buy 2 of these, to bump your ram to 768MB 1066MHZ RDRAM: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=kingston+1066MHZ+256MB+NON (+$200)

ATI Radeon Pro 9800 doesn't come out for another week. But if you want it now, here's the best way to get it fast:
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=302460&pfp=home&cm_vn=cusa_4_1_03&cm_cat=Upgrades&cm_pla=hpf7&cm_ite=302460#checkstore CompUSA Pre-Order.

Since its new, I dunno if I can find a place to get it much cheaper until at least a few weeks or maybe a month.

Check out this alienware one:

I priced out two, whats the difference in chip sets, they have 9800's now, and I am no way installing that shit my self.

Difference between:

ASUS P4T533-C - Intel 850E Pentium 4 Motherboard
1GB RDRAM PC-1066
(more expensive)

and

ASUS P4PE - Intel 845PE Pentium 4 Motherboard DDR
1GB Corsair XMS PC-2700 DDR SDRAM
(cheaper)

Thats a $200 difference in the 2 above.

I've heard the 850 chipset is nice, but no proof to back it up...

I've also heard that although RDRAM has the best potential, it only does well in streaming, whereas DDR does better in random access, (which is more what you would use)

damn gun, you really have a hard-on for those alienware systems, even though they cost 2 times as much for the same shiz, and they have a shorter warranty.

seriously, if you wanna save a grand, get that dell deal tonight, get the ati 9800 pro from comp usa on friday (it comes out on friday), and they'll install the card for you for free.

but if you wanna go ahead on that alienware, the 850e will give you slightly better performance. ask to make sure they're only filling in 2 of the rimm slots, because that would suck if they used up 4, giving you a bitch of a time upgrading.

then again, i don't think the performance difference will be noticeable, so if you wanna save 2 bens, get the 845e.

also, the 9800's come out on friday. you might be able to find a much more competitive price for a 9800 system then. vendors like dell, voodoopc, falcon northwest, etc all prolly won't stock it until then.

Money is not an issue.

The best system at the best price that will last the longest is.

I bought my last desktop 2 years ago, 1.2 ghz 512mb ram, and its fading.

So I go on 2-3 year stunts, so what make sure the long term investment is good.

Ok well so RDRAM= best and 845 chipset.

I will wait till next week and see what Dell has to offer.

I have always purchased Dell btw.. Even have a Dell laptop as well.

I don't like RDRAM because it is RAMBUS, I'd stick with the DDR.
The new system I'm building has an AsusP4PE mobo and 1024 mb of 2700 DDR corsair and a 100gb western digital HD with the 8mb cache. I want a fast machine for Planetside.
I'm waiting for the 3.06 ghz P4 to fall a bit in price and to see how the geforce fx seems to be working before I purchase those last 2 components.
I will not get an ATI card again, ever. I don't care how fast it is. ATI's drivers suck chode.
With an Alienware, you're paying for the name brand and the overclocking. Plus, they use top-of-the line components for maximum upgradeability.
The only drawback with the dell is that the components aren't as nice, so you lose the ability to upgrade somewhat.
If you're not going to be tweaking the system all the time, trying to maximize your performance, I would go with the dell.

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro's shipping now:
http://www.tech-report.com/onearticle.x/4946

My issue with places like Alienware and companies like that is that they grossly overcharge for the "illusion" of being a finely tuned gaming machine.. hehe

While they might install all the latest up-to-date drivers for you, its hardly ever worth the additional cost.

I mean, if you wanna spend 2.4 grand, might as well get a real performance workstation. With 15000 rpm hard drives, and dual processor, etc. You can get a Intel E7505 based Dual Xeon system with HyperThreading for that much.

I'd normally have someone custom build it, but this is the hassle free version (since they're running a $200 off thing right now):

example:

Dell Precision™ Workstation 450 Desktop: Intel® Xeon™ Processor, 2.40GHz, 512K Cache 45D24 [221-1697]
2ND PROCESSOR (Must match speed selection above): Intel® Xeon™ Processor, 2.40GHz, 512K Cache PR24 [311-2254]
Memory: 1GB,DDR266 SDRAM Memory,ECC (4 DIMMS) 1GE4 [311-2260]
Keyboard: Entry Level, PS/2, No Hot Keys E [310-1609]
Monitor: No Monitor Option N [320-3316]
Graphics Cards: ATI, Radeon™ VE, 32MB, VGA (dual monitor capable) RADEONV [320-0568]
First Hard Drive: Special Offer: 80GB ATA-100 IDE (7200 rpm) Hard Drive for the price of 40GB 80I72P [460-7640]
Floppy Drive: 1.44MB FDD,Full-size,no-bezel,F3 bay-1ST SOURCE 3 [340-3736]
Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional, SP1 with Media using NTFS WXP1 [420-1931]
Mouse: PS/2,Dell, 2 button w/no scroll WS [310-8300]
CD-ROM, DVD, and Read-Write Devices: 16X DVD and 48X CDRW with Decode Solution DRW48 [313-1529]
Productivity Software: Dell Precision Workstation NOMSBE [461-2963]
Hardware Support Services: 3Yr Parts + Onsite Labor (Next Business Day) W3YOS [900-1580][900-1582]
Installation Services: No Installation NOINSTL [900-9987]
Special Offers: Free Lexmark Z35 Inkjet Printer! (printer cable not included LEX35 [A0046919]

$2175, Free Shipping. Add $400 for your Radeon 9800, That's $2575 total... which has much more longevity than what you've been pricing out.

I've been running my current computer for 2+ years now and I'm a big fan of the dual processor setup. CPU speed isn't that big a factor, as I don't see that there's anything I can't play right now. Not many games require faster than a 1.4ghz right now, and even if it did, I can devote an entire processor to it while offloading all the overhead background tasks on the other.

Its a dual 1.4 ghz athlon computer, 512mb of ram with 400gb of hd space. The only thing I've upgraded was from a geforce 2 to a geforce 4 last year, and I can still do all the same stuff I've always been doing. (Playing 2 windows of DAOC at 1024x768 each window while burning a dvd, playing mp3s in the background and chatting in irc/aim, with my crafting web page open in the background, all at 1600x1200).

Very nice, but I repeat, I am not installing a damn video card, so I want it all in one package, 2 processors, hmm never thought about that.

What advantage does that give you over say 1 proc at 2.8 or 3.06?

I explained how you can purchase the 9800 pro at compusa and have them install it for you.

dual processor means your os has the ability to run different processes on different processors.

some multithreaded applications written to take advantage of dual processors can actually use both processors at the same time (a lot of 3d modelling programs, adobe photoshop, etc), but for the most part, your main advantage will be the ability to run 2+ applications almost as fast as a normal computer can run 1 (not completely true because of shared resources, but its a good way to think of it at least).
