Building a New PC

Postby Sectoid » Fri Jul 11, 2008 9:18 pm

So as the title says, I'm in need of a new computer and been looking around at a few websites for some help since I'm not really a tech buff. I'm looking at my budget to stay around $900ish. Mainly just looking for a mid to high end, mid-range computer. Also I'm on the fence a bit about which video card to get, not really sure what the power difference is between the two? If anyone has any comments/suggestions or better deals it would be much appreciated.

750W psu is probably overkill.

IMO you probably don't need a quadcore, unless you plan to do a bunch of multitasking or video rendering or one of the few things that can make use of more than 1-2 cores. I would consider the E8400 for 189.99

That takes you from a 2.4ghz to a 3.0ghz per core, although you go from quad to dual, and gain 2mb L2 cache on the dual core (6 per dual vs 4+4 on the quad). Also 1333mhz fsb vs 1066 on the quad. The higher clock and FSB (plus a very minor boost from the cache) would give you some performance boost in single core apps (like most games).

IMO (against Ting's advice), I'd consider an ATI/AMD 4850 which has similar performance to a 8800GTX/9800GTX+. You might search the internets and see how it performs in the game you want to play, but I've seen nothing but positive press about this card.

They sell for about 189.99 as well.

Yeah I wasn't quite sure what kind of wattage I would need, I figured a happy medium of the ones I looked at was best rather than go too low.

How do dual cores work with Vista? As I was looking to getting it and wasn't quite sure how it faired on a dual core vs quad core system.

As for the video card, the last computers I've had ran on AMD cards and was mostly looking to just try out Nvidia this time around.
