Scanning slides

Postby Mourningblade » Fri Aug 04, 2006 10:50 am

I realize this is probably a little low tech for this forum, but.......

I just inherited about 3,000 picture slides covering the last 60 years or so of family history.

Does anyone have any experience scanning these buggers into jpeg form?

I borrowed a scanner from work, Cannon Canoscan 9900F, and followed the instructions for scanning slides, but they all come out black. I'm beginning to think they mean overhead slides, because I can scan everything else in just fine.

I'd be willing to even buy a scanner if I knew it would scan these dang slides.

Any help would be appreciated

Most scanners have a special attachment for scanning slides. Do you have that attachement?

Yeah, this scanner has an attachment for 16 slides at once.....

It works, but all the slides come out jet black, while the dates and places they were developed (on the outside paper border area) scan marvelously clean and clear.

I'm thinking I might have to just take some slides down to Fry's home electronics and demo some scanners :(

moron =)

slides are transparent, you need to remove the large white piece of cardboard which will noramlly be on the reverse side of the scanner door.

then select "trasnparcy" settings, and boom, you will preview the batch.

process to type in your settings 300% 72dpi etc, and make select squares over each slide.

hit the scan all button.

repeat.

yeah basically the light needs to come down through the slides instead of from below like a picture. there is an attachment that goes over the scanner so that it shines through the slides.

or.........

take your checkbook and go to a photo store and git r done
