If I were you, I'd get two.
Get a great one around 600-700 or so, then buy a POS one that you can bring out to the bars etc.
Also, what do you use it for? For anything thats not super high-rez, the $200-300 ones aren't much worse than the $800 ones.

Get a camera for pictures and a camcorder for videos.. Don't expect both out of one.
You'd probably end up better with a 400$ camera and a 400$ camcorder than an 800$ camera or camcorder that does both.
Also, the more expensive cameras are built for photographers. So unless you have any interest in controlling aperture, shutter speed, ISO settings, etc, you might want to stick with a good Point-and-Shoot one for probably around the 300$ range.

I just bought a Canon Powershot A510, for 200.
3.2 MP... only reason i found to buy a higher MP rate woudl be to print out high reso pictures, and im assuming you would be using to upload onto your computer? I found no point in buying a higher MP honestly. Just a waste of money, unless your going for the more "professional look" like Barbos was explaining. Bring lots of batteries either way!!!!

From my past experiance get 2 cameras one for stills and one for video, you can spend about 6 to 7 bills and get 2 cameras that will make you happy. Video that shot still you end up pissed about your still shots. Stills that shot video don't give you enough record time or quality.
