Upgrading old computer with more ram and video card

Postby Tyriis » Sat Apr 24, 2004 7:55 pm

Hiya folks,
Ok atm I have 384 RAM and POS 16 meg video card. My power supply is a 170 watt . So I figure i need to upgrade all 3 in order for this system to continue breathing. The ram specifics are two sticks one being 256 MB SDR DIMM..underneath it say 32ZHS 0112PS03604....How the hell do i figure out how many pins it is ???

The Video Card I am hoping to buy an ok video card (64-128 meg) and a new power supply... Anyways if anyone has upgraded an old system and can help with tips or what info I need to check first please post.

all SDRAM (syncronous DRAM) is of the same pin count. That was the second or third commonly adopted and standardized memory types. So any SDRAM will have the same number of pins.

Typically, mixing RAM has undesired results.

As for a video card, if you are still using SDRAM, its unlikely you have anything more than AGP 2X support on the motherboard, so going all out wont yield any useful results.

A good video card for DAoC (especially with upcoming frontier zvz), would be an Nvidia Ti4200 128MB card. Should be around $100 USD before tax. You can also go with an ATi 9x00 product. Not exactly sure whats good from their low end/budget side. If you included a rough budget, its much easier to narrow things down.

As for power supply. I dont see whats wrong with a 170w if you aren't going to be replacing the motherboard or adding devices. If you were to upgrade, its actually quite expensive relatively speaking. However, almost any generic PSU is good enough. Its only when you are running 5+ external devices or running one of the new video cards requiring a molex connector (all next gen vid cards are going to need this) is your PSU going to matter.

every week there's a new dell deal it seems. in particular, look for deals on the poweredge 400sc (its listed under servers, but it an AMAZING desktop, and often is offered with free CPU upgrades!!!).

holy crap dude,

DELL for the lose. Trust me. Cheaper does not equal a good deal.
Every try to buy those 20 dollar shoes?..... Lasts you 2 months.
Pay 70 dollars for the same type of shoes.... they'll last you 2 years.

Quality has its price... im willing to pay for quality.

pffft, they aren't gonna die in 2 months...

They may not have the performance of a $1000+ computer, but for a cheapo, you can't beat a dell.

We have tons of them at work, and they aren't any worse than any other computer out there, as far as reliability.

We've got skids of Dell's that are 8-9 years old, that you can't hardly break. We're just replacing them because they are old an slow...

way to take my post literally. 2 months/2 years wasnt my point... nor was it reliability... just plain old quality.

you have no point.

You are paying for marketing, and a pretty, colorful box.
$20 shoes will probably last longer than $100 nikes.

However, you aren't as careful with your $20 shoes, as you would be with your $100 shoes. You choose to mow the grass in them, etc.

Doesn't make them any less in quality.

dell uses the same fucking parts as the computer store down the street or that they carry at newegg.

the only difference is.... dell is on such economies of scale that their $400 computer is the same shit it costs you to put together a $700 picking all your own parts, but they can offer a 3 year next day warranty (they come to your house and will replace it outta their truck with a new part), when all you get is shitty 30 day mail in replacements.

don't be an idiot, shop for the best price/quality. deals at dell are the best because they fuck themselves over sometimes and price things at the point where even they'r elosing money.

and when they buy parts in the millions and still sell for a loss, you know you're getting an awesome deal.
