i have a cable modem connection and my wife just got a new laptop. i want to get her internet access and i have been told basically i should by a switch/router/firewall combo to set it up. my first question is does this sound right?
My second question is that if i want to set her up wireless (my comp is already hooked up the normal way) is it possible to have 1 wireless comp and 1 wired? If so how would I set that up? how much would this cost?
networking
I'm not really knowledgeable about the wireless part (mostly because I'm not fond of it anyway)...
If you took the wired route, I would suggest the Linksys Router/Switch

I run a linksys wired router but if you go to say compusa or bestbuy or a store like that they sell the wireless stuff. If I remember correctly the router does both wired and wireless connections but you will also need the wireless card for the laptop. Im also not sure if range is all that great on those or how good or bad the connections are. IMO you cant go wrong with wired connection. there is less to go wrong.

802.11b or g ownz. I love it for my laptop. I never have any problems with wireless.
Just get one of those combo wired/wireless routers.

Yes you can, I run a wireless/wired combo on my network. 1 wireless PC, 1 wireless laptop, 1 wired comp (mine). Most 802.11b (most common you'll find) will have 4 ports for wired connections. Almost all Wireless routers will come with wired ports..
The only thing that can really mess up a wireless signal is other signals and thich walls, metal, etc. And even then its usually those signals that take a beating and not your wireless internet connection. There is nothing wrong with wireless except if you have shitty security and your neighbors decides to tap in

rofl yeah. I was leeching my neighbours wireless connection for a bit. Then he encrypted it and that was the end of that
BUT, to encrypt it, its almost like 1 button push. Very very simple to do. Just morons chose not to.
