The History of Hibernia Merlin (written by Gerald)

Postby Twystyd » Wed Jul 23, 2003 3:08 pm

I thought Gerald did a fine job writing objectively and accurately on this.

It all began in latter part of 2001. Notable guilds who had made their names in games such as Everquest and Ultima Onlime among others would make their journey to Merlin. This is a short history of Merlin Hibernia from that time till the present.

The First Age, The Kings of Thrash Talk

The beginning of history would forever be remembered as the time of thrash talk on these boards. Nothing in the present could rival the board warrioring of Deyth, Itzlegend and Bonedancer.

As they continued their war here on these boards, they would fight each other on minor skirmishes out in the frontiers. Initially, the members of Sinister had the advantage as they levelled faster then most. Eventually, they found that they alone couldn't take keeps nor fight so many enemies. Thus, with other notable guilds who levelled fast also, they formed a new guild called The Angry Elves. However, this new guild was a truly elitist guild that refused to work with other of the lower levels in Hibernia. Members would lead lowbies into high level mobs to die should anyone dare follow them to any raid.

The Angry Elves and later together with their closest and perhaps only ally, Tempest, which was also made up of smaller guilds combined would be of the few guilds out there fighting for Hibernia. As this happened, the thrash talk between the leaders of the Angry Elves, Combine and Conquest continued.

During the Christmas season of 2002, this would end. The forces of Midgard would capture Hibernia's relics. A week later, the 'elders' of the Angry Elves left the game for good.

The Dark Age of Hibernia had begun.

The Second Age, The Dark Age of Hibernia and the Rise of Heros

With 0 relics and all of the 'leaders' of RVR gone, Hibernia was facing its darkest times. There would be so many times that the Hibernian frontier would be filled with Midgard keeps while crews of Midgard murderers would swoop into the Gorge, camp the gates and kill any Hibernians who would dare venture out.

It was during this time however that certain heros would rise from this darkness. These people who had once called Bone Dancer leader would now have to lead Hibernians themselves. Leaders like Graffix and Drakkon would lead small bands of fighters into the frontier of Emain Macha and though heavily outnumbered would fight a guerilla type warfare against superior numbers of enemies. These small band of fighters would rely on scouting reports from such famous rangers as Silus, Teargiver and Waylander to give them excellent intelligence reports on where the enemy was. At this time, the forces of Albion were still bent on protecting the Queen's royal jewels at their portal keep and the only Albions who would venture out were members of Ice Clan. While the Drakkon and Graffix led groups would kill Midgardians out there, the rangers would be plinking off single Albions or Midgardians who were venturing out of their portal keeps.

This small force of heros would eventually grow slightly larger as members of their respective guilds reached their low 40s. Sadly, only the second and third generation of Tempests and Angry Elves among a few others would be out in their frontiers at this time fighting the enemy and taking keeps. There were few other Hibernians out there. The third generation of RVRers were dedicated fighters who would face a severe chewing up from their leaders(especially Drakon) if they screwed up out there. However, they grew a thick skin, would suck up the scoldings and learn from their mistakes.

For months, with so little people the Hibernians would continue fighting a guerilla war against their enemies. Eventually, more Hibernians levelled up and soon they were out fighting as well. They were however still outnumbered and still had 0 relics.

The situation however would take a turn around. Something big had happened that would change the situation between the 3 realms. Midgard dominance would soon take a dive. The Dreds had come.

The Golden Age of Hibernia

The coming of the Dreds would have an adverse affect on the population of Merlin. For Hibernia, the 2nd generation of leaders had left for the Dreds leaving behind the students they used to yell at. However, these 3rd generation of Hibernian leaders were suitably trained and would make their teachers proud. Levelling and fighting during the dark times had honed their skills to a fine edge.

While the Dreds had taken away Hibernias' ablest leaders, it had affected the Midgardians the worst. Whole guilds had left their realm for the Dreds leaving the once proud realm a shadow of its former self. The Albions did not seem to be effected by it. In fact, they started improving a little. Instead of guarding the Queen's jewels at their portal keep, they would venture out and guard the walls of their mile gates.

It was during this time that an unlikely one time only alliance between the Hibernians and their Albion counterparts were formed. Together, the 2 mighty armies joined forces against the half dead Midgard army and took all their relics back. They even took the Midgard relics as well.

The fighting in Emain would soon become a two realm affair between the Hibernians and the Albions. While Hibernia were winning a lot of battles and getting good realm points, the 3rd generation leaders noticed something about quite a few of the next generation of Hibernian fighters. It seemed that this bunch of people were, dare they even say, cowardly. When a charge would be called, the leaders would notice that these people would hang back, letting their comrades bleed and die first. Not only that, these new generation of Hibernians didn't seem to listen to their leaders very well and would always get themselves and others killed because they were out doing their own thing. The leaders were worried and some would try to teach them to be brave while others would yell at them till they turned blue. Unfortunately, these Hibernians were not like them. They weren't the Redsonjas or the Allasters who learned from their scoldings and mistakes. Not only did they not listen, they did not grow thick skins as well. They continued doing the same idiotic thing until the leaders just gave up on them.

However, through sheer luck and perhaps the incompetance of their enemies, the Hibernians continued to win their battles in Emain, even through major cowardice and screw ups. Times were good. Darkness Falls were most of the times in Hibernian hands and a whole generation of farmers would become rich while their fighters defended their lands. The Midgardians were still nowhere to be seen and the money and RPs continued flowing in. It was truly a Golden Age.

The long time of enjoyment turned a whole generation of Hibernians soft and gave them a can't be bothered attitude. However, all good things come to an end. And the Hibernians would soon face dark times again.

The Midgardians had returned.

The Fourth Age, The Return of Midgard and the Rise of the Bandwagonners

While the Hibernians were still enjoying their relatively easy existence, the Midgardians who exiled themselves to the Dreds had returned.

Within a week of the Midgardians return, they seized back their own relic from Hibernia. The sad part of this was, the 4th generation Hibernians did not care enough to come defend their relic. While the leaders tried to rally the men, none bothered to respond. The blood of Lug did not flow thickly in the bodies of these men. The leaders of Hibernia could only watch in disgust as the nonchalance of these Hibernians caused the lost of another relic.
Eventually they would lose all their relics.

While the battles were being fought in the frontiers, another battle were being fought between Hibernians themselves. Political maneuvering and old feuds which had barely held together during the Golden Age had started to unravel during this dark time. It was during this time that one of the oldest and most powerful alliances was broken up due to politics. The new alliance had many lofty ideals but in the end, it would be seen as a paper tiger and even its founding member would leave it.

As fights among Hibernians got more severe, they soon faced an even more serious problem in their frontier. The Emain defenders had over the weeks started to notice an increasing number of Midgardians who were mostly Skiltvaktens and Isen Vaktens. At first, they were dispatched off rather easily and were seen to be free RPs to the Hibernian fighters. However these relatively new Midgardians started to swell in numbers and eventually, their numbers even rivalled the Albions.

These Midgardians would eventually be named
'The Bandwagonners'. This was a truly insulting term and many of the
'Bandwagonners' insisted they did not bandwagon. Whatever the case, the Midgard zerg would soon swarm over Emain Macha.

The Hibernians who had found it easy during the Golden Age would soon find themselves becoming cattle that would power level these Isen Vaktens to Stormur Vaktens.

The 3rd generation leaders who had fought as apprentices during the Dark Age did as best they could to lead the Hibernians to victory. However while the mighty Graffix and Drakkon had THEM to lead in battle, the leaders now had what they would term 'scrub' Hibs to lead. These Hibernians who got everything easy, who got RPs easy were in no way capable of facing a superior number of enemies. All the mistakes and cowarardice they could do in the Golden Age could hardly be done now. Eventually, many leaders threw up their hands in disgust. Many who lead the Hibernians to victory so many times would stop leading. There was no point to it since no one listened anyway.

With no proper leadership, a lot of Hibernians stopped defending their own realm entirely. They would never be seen in Emain Macha again.

While things were bad, the Hibernians who were veterans of the Dark Age continued taking their fight to the frontiers. Like their leaders before them, they practised the art of guerilla warfare on the swelling numbers of Midgardians. The Albions who were still guarding their mile gates were mostly avoided but the Hibernian guerilla squad would many a time charge the Midgardians as they engaged the Albions.

Eventually, these small band of guerilla fighters would come together. Many of them were veterans of the Dark Age. They banded together in a very small but effective alliance. The new alliance would not be affected by politics but would rather be 100% for its members. They would fight for RPs and for each other. Politics be damned.

Times were getting worse for the Hibernians. With no access to Darkness Falls, their money had more or less dried up. Fortunately for them, they had no relics anyway. The Midgardians continued their dominance and would soon take the Albion relics as well. With 6 relics, an army of 'Bandwagonners' even larger then Albion, the Midgardians would assert their influence as their forefathers did during the Dark Age of Hibernia.

Hibernia in the Present

Hibernia at this moment has still 0 relics. However, the situation has improved somewhat.
The 5th generation of Hibernians seem not to have inheritted the inherant cowardice of their 4th generation counterparts. While they will never be as good(this is arrogance on the part of the author) as the 2nd and 3rd generation Hibernian warriors, they have proven themselves more ferocious and brave then the 4th generation Hibernians.

There has also been an exodus of guilds from other servers coming to aid Hibernia in its time of need. These guilds have proven themselves on the battleground and some are even able leaders who have lead Hibernians in battle.

Hibernians seem to be able to, at certain times, rally a huge enough force to fight the Midgardians and Albions. The Albions have improved somewhat in their war in the frontiers. After almost two years, the Albions are now sometimes seen outside their mile gates.

While the Hibernians have not yet been able to retrieve their long lost relics, they are still able to put up a good fight at certain times. The future looks good for Hibernia. The 5th generations Hibs are decent and the influx of the veteran fighters from the other servers will play a big part in the future of Hibernian.
