New Graphix card

So I'm updating my Graphix card for AoC and I could use some advice. Here are my specs.
AMD Athalon64X2 5600 + Socket AM2 duel-core processor
Hitachi 250GB 0A33423 Sata2 U300 7200RPM *MB RoHS Hard drive
Gigabyte GA-M62SME-S2 Socket AM@ NVIDIA GfForce 6100 DDR2-800 PCI.e board
4Gigs Corsair 6400 DDR-2
500 Watt power supply
I'm debating looking for a 8800GT or GTX for around $200 or looking for a 9800 for around $300. This is the first machine i've built and I don't have much experience with graphics cards, so I don't know how much of an upgrade the 9800 is from the 8800.
Right now I found a nice 8800GT w/ 640 memory which i'm leaning towards. Thoughts are appreciated.

How can I tell if that will work with my board? I have 2 PcI slots so I should be good right?

It physically takes up the space of two slots, but it only plugs into one of the slots. So it should work with nearly any board that has PCI express and space for nothing to be plugged in next to it.

Ahh ok I get it, that had me a bit confused. Thanks for the help guys i'm gonna go w/ the 8800.
