Important Info to Know and Have

Postby Rhiandra Rangnar » Sun Nov 12, 2006 3:21 pm

JUST A REMINDER.... in just a few days, all cellphone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls.

YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS.... [via minutes, etc]

To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone:
888-382-1222

It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your
time.

Or you can register online at:

https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx

It blocks your number for five (5) years.

If you get calls after you have registered you can file a complaint online as well.

Not true. Many wireless phone companies have a "white pages" directory, but some of the big companies won't sell your information to the telemarketing companies, per some 2004 law.

Sometimes you get "telemarketing" calls on your cell phone is because a) it was listed on an application for some sort of "credit" (aka getting a new credit card, application for rental) and there should be a check box on the application to not have your number publish/sold to these companies; b) signing up for some specialized service on your phone (premium text messaging, video on demand, etc). Many people like to get good deals on ringtones, joke of the day, and sometimes "naughty" chats by either signing up on a website or sending a text message to a specific 5-digit number. Those companies (ringtone, joke of the day, and other marketing companies) treat it as a "subscription" and may require you to "sign" up on their website to validate the subscription. Or they'll contact the wireless company because you have a "valid" subscription with them and will send your info to other companies.

I could go on and on.

There are ways to prevent it.

1) get a new mobile number
2) don't give out your mobile number to these companies. Just list your landline/home number (which you can already place on a DO NOT CALL list)
The message buck stops here.
