IP probs..

Postby Bobyearl » Tue Aug 24, 2004 3:54 pm

Last night a guild called me up and could not connect to the internet anymore b/c windows was hung up and would not release his IP. he could still do everything else on his computer. Is there a way to make his comp start releasing it agin? Short of reinstalling windows? I have had this problem before, but I just reinstalled. Thanks.

it probably failed to get a dhcp address and has the 168.whatever address windows assigns automatically...

exactly. basicly when the cable company was trying to get the IP of the guildie it would not release it to them. So they could not give his comp "perms" to be on the web

They said it was an operating software issue... Not sure if i believe that. I know those tech support people there are retards following a stupid flow chart... Just thought I would ask. looks like reloading windows would probably be the best issue...

I knwo it wasn't cable modem or net card. swapped those out...

you can't just plug any cable modem to their network...

They have to have the mac address recorded in their system

Some basics that may help him (see bottomo if he's on XP though he may want to start there)... short of it being a ISP problem:

From DOS cmd prompt...(check ipconfig syntax using ipconfig /? sicne it varies on diff windows versions):

ipconfig /release
Turn on/off cable modem.
ipconfig /renew_all
ipconfig /all

Check out the configuration - if you have an IP then all is good. Now try to ping a website...

i.e.
ping www.cnn.com

If you get timeouts this is not a good thing. Otherwise if you get responses you have validated basic network connectivity.

If he's running Windows XP I'd recommend deleteing the DhcpNodeType parameter from registry since it totally screws direct network connectivity. You nodetype is displayed in ipconfig /all .... once you delete it from registry it should show up as "unknown". This itself could be the problem as I recently encountered it when hooking my new spiffy laptop up to my network a couple weeks back.

I know you cannot just plug it in... I am using the terminology they gave me. Tried all those things out zoid none worked.... could not ping b/c i could not get on their network....

with a new net card and new modem they could not validate anything from me b/c they said they could not get my IP... they said windows would not release it. I have had this happen to me before, so I thought I would ask you guys if you knew what might be done to remedy it short of reinstalling windows... which is what was done both times to fix this prob.

Thanks for helping. anymore ideas you got would be more than willing to learn about.
